After a sorcerer killed her mother, Melantha learns she's a spell-turner and goes after the sorcerer.

Melantha Caldwell is a powerless spell-turner. Six weeks ago, a sorcerer killed her mother. Now a wise-cracking old elf wants her to help catch the sorcerer, but the only help he's offering comes in the form of a talking cricket. If she doesn't act fast, spell-turners and humans alike will end up dead.

With her powers not yet developed, Melantha will be defenceless, but the mission will be downright deadly if the sorcerer figures out who she is and decides she will follow in her mother’s footsteps.
