I'm starting a new story using a new approach: I thought I would start by knowing what the main characters want. This is something I frequently don't discover until I'm half-way through the story, and then spend days revising everything I'd written to reflect the new want. I'd never questioned the method; writing is re-writing. But this week I thought, "What if I had a character who wanted X. And then another character who's job it is to guard X." And then one thing led to another, and now I have a new story under way. Not sure yet if it's novel material or merely a short story.
